Like, the entire art style changed in this (as in, not just this character):

Sometimes it's pretty drastic:

The degree of change can pretty ridiculous, which can be entertaining. I can kinda respect an artist's ability to keep the art consistent through 100+ chapter mangas though.

Thoughts? Also, anyone know why girls cutting their hair when they want to "get serious" is a thing?

Be thankful for the wisdom granted to you.

It's not really strange especially with long running manga.

I think those that don't change art styles are more of a minority.

No, unless it drastically different, ex Bubblegum Crisis OVA VS Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040, Fairy Tail VS Fairy Tail 2 or Gunslinger Girl VS Gunslinger Girl Il Teatrino.

As for the girls cutting their hair thing. The long hair is sorta symbolism for childishness, innocence, or purity, and cutting it would mean losing that or an active attempt to get rid of it and be more grown up.

well, if the artist always sees the same images every-time he draws, he will improved.
If he's lazy as "Togashi, Yoshihiro" creator of HXH. well instead of improvement we can see trash drawing :D

The world is cruel, ugly and pitiful. Let's watch anime and make it colorful

You mean for one scene or just generally over time?
I think it's fun a lot of the times when an author makes a drastic change in style for one or two panels to illustrate a point or make a joke or whatever.

As for changing over time, I guess it just happens. In your second example it sure seems like an improvement (assuming the second picture came later) and in the first example I don't think I see it. As far as I can tell the difference in her cheeks is based on her having a totally different facial expression in both panels.

But in general I'm accustomed to reading comics like Fables, DMZ, Preacher and whatnot where it's not rare that the artist completely changes or that there are a few chapters by guest artists, each having completely different styles while telling one continous story so I don't think I'm bothered by it.

I probably regret this post by now.

I think that Ishida Sui (Autor of Tokyo Ghoul) improved so much from Tokyo Ghoul to Tokyo Ghoul:re (*_*) I love his art style

In Ore-sama Kingdom the main girl kept changing from normal size to being a chibi and it was technically canon that she had changed, although more for a joke. On a related note, the second season of Seitokai no Ichizon had a noticeably different art style than the first.

I don't pay much attention to that stuff. Although even I was a bit shocked when I saw the first chapter of Bleach after I started reading from the middle.
I mean, I'm the kind of guy who didn't really notice the change between the first and second season of Oregairu until it was pointed out to me. xD

Rosario Vampire is a story about a boring, same-face, no-name shounen-kun slowly but steadily turning into a sexy badass Yagami Light.

Then:

Now:

It's a unique kind of story where you start out jealous of his harem-having ability, and end the story as part of his harem, perilously wishing he could fuck you too.

Actually, in some cases, (like in my first example for sure) you can actually backtrack and see that the character design was suddenly changed (as opposed to gradually). The trick is to focus on some other characters in a subplot so that nobody notices.

Nah, that's completely explainable: he got plastic surgery thrown in with his magical surgery.

Pretty sure Attack on Titan had a problem with consistent art style but eventually fixed it, so it's often for the better.

I noticed a steady improvement during "Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu". Early episodes the characters are borderline cringe-worthy. Later stuff is pretty sharp. Hard to believe it's the same show at times.

The one that annoys me the most is "Dragon Ball Z"

Mrs. Landingham, what's next?

I don't know a case when the drawing of an artist is suddenly changed in the same chapter (exceptuating series who does that for comedic purposes, like the Monogatari Series, D-Frag or Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei).

Of course, the most logic response to that is that the artist improves his/her drawings with the time, to the point the differences between his artsyle before and after the change is very noticeable (like in the case of Bleach).

Yes, I do. and sometimes it's more than obvious.

Here's an example of my favorite character Conrad

I liked how it improved at first but in the recent years the characters are getting skinnier and somewhat shorter.

Shinguku Nakamuras art style changed quite a lot over the years.

Just look at the early volumes of Junjou Romantica or Sekaiichi Hatsukoi. Compared to the recent chapters they look quite derpy.

You can also see this in the anime adaptions. Just compare Junjou Romantica season 1 to the third season in 2015. That's what I call an evolution.

Not really surprising over time. Fairy Tail, Hanakimi, Furuba are pretty obvious then and now as the author learns how to draw their art faster. Even Clamp has changed over time.

Also, it would not be surprising if assistants had to draw characters when they are pressed for time.

Yea, in D.Grayman, Allen starts off looking like your standard shounen series kid/young teen when you first see him. Now he's a super hot bishounen that you'd see in some shoujo manga.
