In deze warmbloedige kleianimatie wordt de achtjarige Mary (stem Toni Collette) gepest op school. Zij heeft geen vrienden, en schrijft daarom vanuit Australië naar een willekeurig persoon in de Verenigde Staten. De aan het syndroom van Asperger lijdende Max (stem Philip Seymour Hoffman) is 44 en kan niet op een normale manier vrienden maken, maar begint toch een bijzondere penvriendschap met haar. De film zit vol geslaagde visuele grappen en ingenieuze woordgrappen. Ondanks de klei een ontroerende menselijke ode aan de vriendschap. Regisseur Adam Elliot ontving in 2003 een Oscar voor zijn korte kleianimatie Harvie Krumpet.
